Hi,
Try first here: http://www.simplebreakdowncover.co.uk. This is a price comparison website and they compare UK and European breakdown covers – actually compare, not only list banners and ads.
There is a quite sophisticated search engine which compares hundreds of covers and they’ll give you the exact premium based on your individual requirements (i.e. car age, your age etc.) for the whole variety of recovery providers (AA, RAC and smaller ones). They won’t list policies that are not relevant to you (i.e. your car is to old etc.).
There are two types of search available: you can search covers that are available within your budget or you can choose options you need and they’ll list products that match your requirements (with their prices) from the majority of breakdown service providers operating in the UK.
You can find some special offers there as well which will give you extra discounts (that is, some covers can cost you less than advertised on providers’ websites…). For example you can get massive cash back (£15) on any UK cover from either RAC or The AA (probably the most reliable and the biggest breakdown recovery providers in the UK).
All you need to do is just select "Voucher redemption" from the menu, enter one of the codes below and follow the instructions.
The promotional codes are:
AA2UKRAC – £15 cash back on RAC UK cover
AA1UKAA5 – £15 cash back on AA UK cover
I do not know when they expire so it is probably better to use them sooner than later.
Hope this helps.

depends what type of cover you are looking for… if you are doing long journeys it is best to include a "relay / recovery" option – this will entitle you to be taken to your destination or back home again, so in effect if you were in London and wanted to get to Scotland, you would be entitled to. Basic cover is just for roadside assistance, which would mean you would be repaired at the roadside if this was possible / practical or towed to a local garage who would accept the vehicle and repair it (at your cost) or you could have a local tow (average 10 miles, but may differ from organisation to organisation) to your chosen location. The 2nd option is cheaper, will give you cover and peace of mind in an emergency, but the full cover is the best option as 1 tow off the motorway, for example will mean your annual membership is "paid for".
Having said that Green flag is a good all round option, one that I would consider on a budget.
