Breakdown Cover Highlighted by M5 Tyre Change
Though rarely considered unimportant, the importance of UK breakdown cover was given an extra-ordinary shove into the news with reports that were made to emergency services by concerned motorists. Their concerns? A pair of drivers attempting to change a car’s tyre…in the fast lane of the M5.
One of the AA’s spokesmen released a statement noting that the two driver’s actions had been ‘just absurd.’ Following on from this comment, Mr Andrew Howard, Head of Road Safety at the company noted that the most important thing in the event of a breakdown is to ‘get the car to the hard shoulder whenever possible, and then call the emergency services for help.’
Mr Howard also put much emphasis on the fact that whilst a breakdown may prove costly, it is ‘a lot cheaper than a life.’
Keen to stress the importance of safety, he also noted that even the motorway hard shoulder can be ‘very dangerous’, and that where possible, motorists should get out of their vehicles in the event of a breakdown, and make a call to whomever is responsible for their UK breakdown cover.
A local police chief based in Wellingborough described the motorway tyre change as ‘a horror story waiting to happen’ and that the attempt was ‘potentially disastrous.’
During the 1980′s, it was estimated that between 25 and 40 people were being killed on the hard shoulder. Though that figure has now decreased, this incident still shows the importance of gaining the correct UK breakdown cover. Rescuemycar.com are urging people to take the proper measures to ensure they are safe in the event of a breakdown, that is to contact their provider immediately and follow the advice given by the experts.
