Finding the Breakdown Cover That is Best for You
My Corsa has just broken down, was driving along, engine light came on and it conked out, whats wrong with it?
Managed to get it started but it still conked out/seemed like it has stalled 5 times getting it to the car park just up the road.
Anyway, whats likely to be wrong with it? I’m so annoyed! I’ll have to get it towed with my break down cover home, but how much will it be to tow it to a garage?
Also the actual cost of repair of what you think it might be?
If this is any help, it has been a bit weird today, sounding like it’s going out of gear, stupidly I still drove it, being the daft cow that I am! (Only had it for a month, it’s my first car!)
I pulled over as soon as it came on, but just after it came up, the car stalled.
We’re with Green Flag, being a Sunday, I’ll have to get it towed home, and then to a garage. (Very annoying)
I don’t know what light it is, it’s the one with the little thunder sign, haha…that’s the only way I can describe it.
Is this going to be expensive? I’m just about to sell the car so it might not be worth doing.
Yes, there is oil. Got it topped up in the morning, actually.
There was a problem with my breakdown cover coming out, they said I wasn’t covered (I am) Luckily I was in a car park that will call out the RAC for you for free and tow you home. The guy said my car was damp, got it started and off I went.
Only problem now is the almost popping out of gear. Hopefully it will be ok and won’t break down again? Selling it within two weeks to move abroad to a better place. ![]()

By engine light , do you mean the engine management light or the ignition light ?The management light usually doesn’t signal a bad fault, ie, you can still drive. But the ignition light will come on if the alternator isn’t working or other ignition faults. I can only suggest you get a look at the fan belt or the timing belt. My management light comes on if the air filter needs changing, that is what I mean by not a bad fault.

You will need to scan the computer with an OBDII scanner….. then you will know what you need to replace. It could be anything…..

Could be the cam belt or a number of things… some serious, some not so serious, such as coils.
You shouldn’t ever risk driving your car with the engine light on. Stop the car. The engine light warning is a big warning that something may seriously be wrong. If you keep driving you risk making what can easily be repaired in to something that fully breaks and causes lots of damage.
As for breakdown repair/tow… depends what kind of recovery service you have paid for. AA might come and fix it for you and just charge you the part. Greenflag would probably only tow you home or to a garage.
Update: Why pay for it to be towed twice. I’d ring up a few garages and find one to book in at. Then get Greenflag to tow you there. They probably won’t come and tow you home, and then next week tow you to garage from home.

best thing to do is to spend some money and get it repaired with a good car repair shop for once and for all. And get the whole car checked out properly.

Did you check the engine oil level? No oil = seized engine?

The light you describe is the engine mangement light. It could be any thing the most likley is your mass airflow meter but it needs to be scanned to check the trouble code.An airflow meter is around £86.
