Finding the Breakdown Cover That is Best for You
How does RAC Roadside cover work?
I am looking at taking out the roadside policy with the RAC for £34.50 for the year.
It says that if they can’t fix your vehicle at the roadside they will tow you to the nearest approved garage.
My question is…. do they fix your car for free or do you get a big bill at the end of it? Or, if they tow you to a garage, again would you get the bill?
I probably sound really dumb but I just can’t see how paying a one off £34 can get your car fixed if it breaks down. Does the fee just cover the privilige of someone coming straight out to you at the roadside?
Thanks!

What you get is a patrolman or subcontractor who will attempt to get your car going again…The parts he uses will cost you.
You will be towed to the nearest garage or home but this will be limited to 10 miles…anything more will be charged.
Check to see if the cover is roadside and home as if you cannot start the car outside your house you won’t be covered.
I work for all the major breakdown companies and would advise you to go with Britannia.

no they won’t repair your car for free, and make sure they will tow you to a garage, cos we had that package and they said they could only tow us 2 miles!!!
Was not happy

What they most likely are saying is…if yyou need a jump, they’ll jump it’ if you need fuel…they’ll bring it, if you have a flat….they’ll change it. read the fine print . They are not going to change your brakes or engine for free

They fix your car at the roadside if they can. They obviously can’t carry many spares so its limited to fairly simple things. If they can’t fix it they will tow you to a garage – the garage will charge you for the work they do. The fee just covers someone coming out and recovering your car and you.

They will do their best to get you going again at the road side as part of the membership price.
If however the breakdown is beyond the scope of reasonable roadside repair they will tow you to a garage or back home, in which case any further repair costs are payable by you.

They will attend to see if the vehicle can be fixed at the roadside but not at your home address, unless covered by the level of service you have, allowing up to 1 hour of the RAC Man’s time.
If it can be repaired they will do that. and you will only pay for any parts etc used e.g. If you run out of petrol, they will get a gallon, charge you for it and then you go and fill up the tank – Job done!
If they cannot fix it, they will tow you , as stated , to the nearest local garage and you will have to arrange with that garage what the next step is, either you pay them to fix it or you arrange your own recovery from there.
If you have the additional services (Recovery or Home Start) and the car cannot be repaired they will take it to your chosen destination, either wherever you were going or back home and then it’s up to you to get it fixed.
Your £34 will get you basic cover which will cover the likes of running short of petrol, flat tyres, flat battery but little else as modern cars need hi-tech equipment to fault-find. Having said that If you do need a gallon of petrol at 2 in the morning, £34 is not a lot to pay to have it brought to you!

Either an RAC patrolman or if unavailable the RAC will send the nearest RAC approved garage.
It depends on whats wrong with ur car, they wont fix steering, suspension or brakes, instead they will tow u to their garage to fix it or ur preference back home or a local garage bof bur choice if near home, up- to anything from 10 nto 25 miles i cannot remember.
Depending on patrolman, the car if cannot be fixed in arouind 30 mins willhave to be recoverred, but some patrolmen are pretty good and give u that extra bit of service and bget ur car running again.
Jobs that get done f.o.c. labouir only is apdart from petrol and flat tyres, is broken fan belt, radiator hoses that fail, replace radiator, fix non starter if possible, failed lights bulbs, blown fuses usualy ladies as the lads usually know how to check and replace fuses, help to get into car when keys r left in cars ignition etc.
some jobs that r an easy job on some cars like broken fan belts can be a lot bigger on others.
a lot of cars nowadays have to go to a garage as theres not much any patrolman can do because of electronics
good luck.

The best thing to do is to speak directly with the RAC before you take out the policy. Ask them lots of questions about imaginary situations that may happen to you as often there are hidden things within the policy that can catch you out.
Ja.
