The breakdown cover’s terminology mainly originated from the United Kingdom. Other countries also provide services that are equal to UK’s breakdown cover, but they are called by other terms such as roadside assistance, etc.

The service had originated when early progenitors of motoring organizations in the UK (like Automobile Association and Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club). The first automobile services are available only to the members of the clubs, including the creation of patrolmen to help the members in times of need.

When the need for new technological advances rose, the availability of people became more and more practical. Also when phone booths and other communication devices are scattered across the country, getting help became a lot easier. Recently, many insurance companies started providing breakdown covers for the masses since the number of vehicles are already starting to rise.
