It depends on the motorbike and car you are comparing. I have a Honda ST1100 and it does 30mpg, my car Mondeo does 32 mpg! Cost wise the bike costs roughly the same to service as the car, so do tires and insurance.
The bike is always quicker to get about, far more fun and I can nip through traffic and past queues. That said without doubt I am more vulnerable and if I were in an accident it would hurt more on the bike.
To me it comes down to the weather, on a nice sunny day the bike wins every time, on a frosty or rainy day the car wins every time.
The decision is entirely personal choice but cost wise it totally depends on which bike you are comparing to which car.

I live in Australia and ride my motor bike to work and only drive occasionally to work, i ride 23 kilometres each way, i have had one for over 30years so my insurance is very low, fully covered, and it does save me heaps, it costs me about $12 a week on fuel, if i drove the car that would cost me over $50 a week, as far as maintenance goes, i change my oil 3 times a year, and oil filter, and take it to a workshop for major service once a year, you will save heaps, but there is something to consider, other road users, they are not very friendly to motor bike users, at least once a week someone will try and take me out, no joking, but for some strange reason most of the times i sense when they are going to do something like that, just consider the accident risk before you do.

Sorry i cant give any figures for your question but i think there is much more to consider other than cost. I rode motorcycles for 10 years and have now been driving for 16 years. First and foremost you have to consider where you will actually be riding a motorcycle to and from. If your journey means you have to ride through large city’s like London then i would stick with a car on safety grounds alone. If you are riding a small motorcycle best bet a 125 then overall costs would be much cheaper than running a car. Should you get the bug for motorcycling and get a large sports bike then obviously the difference closes but even then after initial purchase costs i would still say that motorcycling is still cheaper than running a car. Wear and tair on a small bike is much much cheaper than trying to keep a car road worthy. To be honest i wouldn’t consider going back to a motorcycle for commuting far because i think the risks are much greater now as the std of car drivers seems to be worse than ever. On the otherhand if your route doesnt involve too heavily congested roads then you would not only enjoy the freedom but also the costs of running a small motorcycle.

I agree with all of the above comments but wwhen I used to own a motorcycle for commuting I owned a shaft drive to save the expense on chains and sprockets and used dual compound tyres on my 650cc and got 21,000km out of a back tyre and 28,000km out of a front tyre riding conservatively.
Some of the newer larger bikes spend $350 on a back tyre to last 5,000km. More horsepower and ridden harder will increase your cost for your motorcycle

running costs for sports motorcycles are not cheap especially if you live in an urban area like london.insurance is the largest outlay followed by maintainance,tyres,road tax & not forgetting helmet & clothing(which wear out very quickly,if used daily).bikes over 500cc,multicarb or fuelinjected don’t dont have great fuel consumption either.
if you are really cost-conscious,then stick to something under 400cc,with no more than two cylinders!this would be an ideal commuter machine for 20-25 mile round trips.
